List of National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA) accredited laboratories for asbestos sample analysis

Many buildings were damaged by wind and/or water during and following Tropical Cyclone Debbie.  If your house was built or renovated prior to 1990 it may contain asbestos sheeting. Asbestos in your home can be found in your walls, ceilings and flooring. It can also be found in the external cladding of your house, including your roof.

Before you do any removal or repair work, you should check if materials in your house contain asbestos.  The best way to tell if the product contains asbestos is to arrange for a sample to be taken and analysed by a NATA accredited laboratory. The laboratory must be NATA accredited to perform asbestos identification analysis in bulk materials, using stereo microscopy and polarised light microscopy (PLM), including dispersion staining (DS), asbestos in bulk materials, based on the guidelines of Australian Standard 4964-2004 Method for the qualitative identification of asbestos in bulk samples.

NATA provides an up to date listing of accredited laboratories. The table below indicates asbestos testing facilities in Queensland (up to date as at 31 March 2017). Contact one of these laboratories for advice on how to send a sample and the analysis cost. Following sample analysis you should be provided with a report on the results. Note, some of these laboratories may operate laboratories at other locations, including regional centres, to that listed in the following table.
