Which businesses are licensed to remove asbestos in Queensland?

Friable asbestos

Businesses that hold a class A licence are able to remove any amount of friable asbestos (material that contains asbestos and is in a powder form or that can be crumbled, pulverised or reduced to a powder by hand pressure when dry) and more than ten square metres of non-friable asbestos. Non-friable asbestos (bonded) materials include asbestos cement sheeting, often called fibro, used in many Queensland buildings before 1990. The sheeting was used for cladding, roofs and fences and can often be found as backing boards in wet areas like kitchens and bathrooms.

Non-friable (bonded) asbestos

Businesses that hold a class B licence are only able to remove more than ten square metres of non-friable asbestos or any asbestos contaminated dust or debris associated with the removal of more than ten square metres of non-friable asbestos. The licence does not authorise the removal of friable asbestos.

Asbestos assessors

An independent licensed asbestos assessor is required to carry out air monitoring, clearance inspections and issuing clearance certificates for friable asbestos removal.

Ten square metres or less of non-friable asbestos

A licence is not required to remove ten square metres or less of non-friable asbestos, however, a person conducting a business or undertaking (PCBU) must do the work in accordance with Part 8.7 of the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011. Homeowners and owner-builders

Homeowners must hold a certificate obtained under arrangements approved or established by the Department of Health to remove more than ten square metres of non-friable asbestos materials.

Licences issued in other states

Asbestos removalists licensed in other states can perform licensed asbestos removal work in Queensland if:

• the licence was issued by a corresponding regulator under a corresponding WHS law; and
• the licence is being used in accordance with the terms and conditions under which it was granted.
