Glen James, Foodbank

Category two – Best individual contribution to work health and safety

Foodbank is Australia's largest food rescue organisation, rescuing $80 million worth of food a year and feeding over 197,000 disadvantaged Queenslanders each month. Glen James' passion for safety has been the driving force behind systematic and cultural change in the organisation's work health and safety.

Glen systematically worked through each of the challenges faced by many organisations with a large volunteer base. He introduced formal policies, plans and processes to manage the health and safety risks in a dynamic environment with a complex supply chain. Glen included staff and volunteers in the decision-making and sought expert advice to apply best practice and measure the effectiveness of the system.

Glen has shown a commitment to growth and continuous improvement, often researching, studying and writing policy in his own time. His philosophy of inclusion and accountability has influenced a positive and engaged safety culture. Glen made work health and safety simple, inclusive and available to staff from the moment of their induction.
