BP Australia

Category eight – Best rehabilitation and return to work management system

BP Australia (BP), in partnership with Recovery Partners, have implemented a decentralised return to work model that empowers line managers to own, lead and support their employees to return to work. The model was developed by a multidisciplinary agile team and overseen by the national wellbeing advisor who provided strategic oversight and coaching, helped with managing the injury management processes and maintaining stakeholder relationships.

An Injury Support Kit was developed to provide line managers with resources, best practice guidance and advice on managing work related and non work related injuries. The Recovery Partners Injury Reporting Centre was also introduced to provide tailored allied health support to line managers and injured workers. Customised return to work documents and other resources were also developed to facilitate the injury management process. These changes were communicated to all BP employees through effective change management, simplified process and procedures, resource customisation, and tailored communications, training, and coaching.

Since the implementation of this model, empowering line managers and employees to take an active role in recovery and return to work, BP Australia have experienced an increase in early injury reporting, enhanced return to work rates and an improved culture of safety.
