Public consultation on Back-up lifting for precast panels
Draft position paper – Lifting of precast panels
We have completed public consultation on the Lifting of precast panels position paper to provide important safety information. In response to these findings, the paper also outlines some proposed changes to practice.
Feedback was sought on the proposed changes to inform amendments that will be made to the Tilt-Up and Pre-cast construction Code of Practice 2003 (PDF, 0.96 MB) (the Code). See the position paper and supporting attachments below.
Consultation information
The Code, published in 2003, provides guidance on the safe casting, lifting, rigging systems, propping, securing, and working at height with panels and other pre-cast concrete elements.
Under the Code, backup lifting systems are specified where worker and public exclusion zones cannot be implemented when lifting precast concrete panels.
Backup lifting is a third point of connection to the precast panel, which is intended to contain the load in the event of the failure of the primary lifting system (to prevent any part of the load falling to the ground).
