Labour hire WIC allocation guide
Every accident insurance policy has a WorkCover Industry Classification (WIC) code. This code is used to calculate the risk and performance of each industry.
Labour hire businesses use 20 specialised WICs:
- 1 WIC is for your own admin staff – WIC 721236, and
- 19 WICs for the industries your workers are placed in.
Please follow the below steps to ensure you are allocating the correct labour hire WIC when declaring wages or lodging a claim on behalf of a labour hire worker.
Step 1: Verify your client's policy and business activity
- Follow this link to verify the WorkCover policy for each client.
- Enter your client's ABN into the ABN search.
- Follow the prompts to check they are covered.
- Their business WIC will appear – take a note of this (this reflects their business activity).
If you can’t find the WIC or are unsure of your client’s primary business activity, please reach out to your WorkCover contact or call 1300 362 128.
Step 2: Match the WIC to a labour hire industry
- Open the Labour Hire WIC Table.
- Search for your client’s WIC (from Step 1).
- Find the matching Labour Hire WIC and note the ‘Industry’ name in column three.
Step 3: Declare wages against correct WIC
You’ll need to declare your wages each year when you renew your WorkCover policy.
- For labour hire workers:
Enter wages next to the ‘Industry’ name you found in Step 2. - For your own admin staff:
Enter wages using WIC 721236 – Contract Staff Services (Own Administration Staff).
Step 4: Assign claims to correct WIC
If you are completing an online claim form on a labour hire worker’s behalf, you have the option of allocating that claim to the WIC of the client where the worker was injured.
- Follow Step 1 and 2 to find the Labour Hire WIC related to your client.
- Add this WIC under the employment section of the online claim form.
- If a claim has already been registered without your involvement, you can check to see if that claim has been allocated to the correct WIC by logging into WorkCover Connect and navigating to the claim details.
If a WIC has been incorrectly assigned to a claim or wage declaration, please reach out to your WorkCover contact or call 1300 362 128 to have this amended.
