Craig Hatchard, Transport and Main Roads

Category two – Best individual contribution to work health and safety

Transport and Main Roads' responsibilities include inspecting, maintaining, rehabilitating and constructing the Queensland state-controlled road and bridge network, where workers often encounter asbestos materials.

Craig Hatchard has made a significant contribution to asbestos management at Transport and Main Roads. With the support of Transport and Main Roads's leadership team and demonstrating his personal and consultative style, Craig visited worksites and operational depots to better understand the people, work activities and sub-cultures.

He led the development and implementation of systematic changes, introducing an asbestos management plan and a digital asbestos register. He improved workplace capabilities by rolling out a training, competency and awareness program, dedicating personal time to meet the needs of shift workers and making himself available around the clock with the 'Better call Craig' initiative.

Craig's expertise is valued by his colleagues and the organisation. His hands-on attitude and effective engagement with all levels of staff has transformed Transport and Main Roads' attitude towards training and education, ultimately resulting in a complete cultural shift towards working safely with asbestos.
