Authorised Persons clarified for electrical contractor licence holders

The new electrical licensing system is live. Learn what Authorised Persons (APs) can do, how this affects your licence, and how to manage AP status changes in the new system.

All existing electrical contractor licence information has been transferred from the old licensing system to the new system.

As part of this transition, all Qualified Technical Persons (QTPs) and Qualified Business Persons (QBPs) were automatically nominated as Authorised Persons (APs) in the new system.

For all new electrical licence applications each person needs to be nominated as either a QTP, QBP and/or AP.

What an AP authorises:

An AP is an employee or director of your business who holds the authority to make changes to the electrical contractor licence. This includes the following responsibilities:

  • renewing the licence
  • changing the contractor licence class (e.g. from unrestricted to restricted)
  • adding or removing Qualified/Authorised Persons
  • adding registered business names
  • updating contact details
  • surrendering the licence.

A QTP and/or QBP will only be able to remove themselves from an electrical contractor licence if they are not nominated as an AP.

If you do not wish for these individuals to have this authority, you can remove AP’s via the portal.
