New international Artificial Intelligence Standard published

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is evolving rapidly, and is changing the way we live and work. The technological advancements have created exciting opportunities for varying industries, as well as many known and unknown risks – yet to be understood by regulators.

To help navigate risks with this expanding technology, Governments across the world have begun introducing mandatory safeguards and standards to attempt to manage the reach and influence of AI in our lives.

In December 2023, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), published ISO/IEC 42001, Information technology - Artificial intelligence - Management system. This international standard specifies the requirements for establishing, implementing, maintaining and continually improving an Artificial Intelligence Management System (AIMS).

It aims to support organisations to leverage the benefits of AI for their business, while continuing to operate in a safe and responsible way, outlining internal governance and risk management steps, that will support AI development.

Standards Australia (SA) expects that ISO/IEC 42001 will be the key standard for AI governance in Australia and internationally. SA will be offering a new training course for organisations and individuals who wish to learn more about the standard and how to implement it in their business.
