Electrical Licences vs Electrical Work Training Permits – know the difference
As electrical professionals in Queensland, it is important to understand the difference between an electrical licence and an electrical work training permit, and to ensure you hold the correct authorisation for the work you are performing.
What is an electrical work licence?
An electrical work licence allows the holder to carry out electrical work (within their licence scope) without supervision. An electrical licence can be renewed.
The Electrical Safety Office issues a five-year electrical work licence term to qualified individual applicants who meet the eligibility requirements for their chosen licence category.
What is an electrical work training permit?
Electrical work training permits are issued to eligible applicants to allow them to perform supervised, on-site electrical work as part of the training required to obtain the electrical work licence.
An electrical work training permit allows supervised electrical work only, to complete training to become eligible for a work licence. Some applicants may need to complete further training to be eligible for the electrical work licence they are seeking.
A training permit comes with conditions:
- The holder must be enrolled in a structured training program with a Registered Training Organisation.
- The holder may only perform electrical work under supervision by an appropriately licensed electrical worker.
- The holder is only permitted to perform electrical work relevant to the scope of work stated on the permit and only within the dates stated on the permit.
Training permits are issued for 12 months. If the required training is not completed within this time, a new permit must be applied for. Permits cannot be renewed.
Additional permits may be granted if there is a genuine reason for the delay and fees apply for each additional application.
Now is the time to check your licence/s and permit/s, to ensure all your accreditations are up to date.
