Case study: FKG supporting workers’ health and wellbeing

The FKG Group (FKG) delivers a wide variety of building and engineering projects in Queensland, New South Wales and the Northern Territory. The company has a strong family-friendly culture and an established health and wellbeing program, Wellness Matters.

FKG's management understands that workers who eat healthily, are physically active and get enough sleep, make better work safety decisions. To support them, the company's head office in Toowoomba has a heated lap pool, sauna, and a fully-equipped gym. FKG even gets employees' kids involved with those at the on-site early years learning centre growing vegetables which go to the FKG kitchen to provide free, nutritious lunches for staff every day.

The company's healthy eating program complements other health and wellness initiatives, including:

  • free skin checks
  • flu vaccinations
  • access to confidential counselling and assistance
  • corporate health insurance discounts
  • health and wellbeing information on the intranet
  • lunch and learn education sessions
  • community-based activities such as charity events like the Canungra Combat Challenge.

FKG's latest health and wellness initiative is the company's involvement in the Virgin Pulse Global Challenge. FKG funds 50 per cent of their employees' involvement in the challenge and almost 100 workers have already signed up. Employees that haven't signed up for the challenge still have access to some of the resources and information available through the intranet.
