Construction ISSC communique: March 2026
The Construction Industry Sector Standing Committee (the Committee) met on Wednesday, 18 March 2026.
Members received a presentation from the Office of Industrial Relations (OIR) on fatigue in the construction sector. Members noted that fatigue is an extremely complex hazard to monitor and noted that construction sector projects often involve long working hours. Members noted the importance of building capability for industry to manage fatigue and agreed that additional resources for the sector would be welcomed.
Members discussed the recommendations of the Queensland Productivity Commission (QPC): Opportunities to improve productivity of the construction industry (QPC Report) and the Queensland Government’s response to the QPC’s final report. Members noted concerns regarding the potential impact of several recommendations contained in the QPC Report, in particular recommendation 50.
Members noted that with Brisbane entering a period of intensive construction activity, driven by the 2032 Olympics and Paralympics Games, resources will be necessary to ensure construction sector work health and safety compliance remains strong. Members also noted the increased emphasis on proactive compliance programs.
The next meeting of the Committee will be held on Wednesday, 3 June 2026.
