Construction ISSC communique: April 2024
The Construction Industry Standing Committee (the Committee) met on 17 April 2024. The Chair, Mr Kurt Pauls, welcomed members to the first meeting of the Committee.
The Chair facilitated discussions that focused on establishing a foundation for the Committee’s three-year term including:
- Endorsing the Committee’s terms of reference, a key governance document which has been developed to support the operations of the Committee; and
- Identifying the reporting requirements to undertake Committee functions; noting the primary function of an Industry Sector Standing Committee is to give advice and make recommendations to the Work Health and Safety board about work health and safety in the industry sector for which the committee is established (Work Health and Safety Act 2011, Schedule 2, Division 5, Section 15).
The Chair invited Committee members to discuss the current and emerging issues and risks in the construction industry. Following key matters were raised by the Committee chair and members:
- Inspector qualifications and training framework
- Need for guidance on Psychosocial Code of practice
- Licensing requirements and competency framework/certificates for the high risk-earthmoving machinery
- Status of Tilt-up and pre-cast construction code of practice 2003 and need for review of
- Welding processes code of practice 2021 and
- Managing respirable crystalline silica dust exposure in construction and manufacturing of construction elements code of practice 2022
The Members discussed including items for future meetings including a Q&A session with Deputy-Director General, Office of Industrial Relations and a discussion on status of Codes of Practice.
The next meeting of the Committee will be held on Wednesday, 10 July 2024.
