Targeted asbestos compliance activity

From August to October 2026, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) will undertake a targeted compliance campaign focusing on asbestos licence holders, demolition licence holders and licensed asbestos assessors (LAAs).

As part of the campaign, WHSQ will investigate the accuracy of notifications submitted to the regulator, with a particular focus on:

• the type of notification submitted
• the validity of a 5-day notification versus emergency notification
• the accuracy of identified asbestos containing materials (ACM)
• whether the Licence Class meets the criteria for removal
• whether ACM was identified and removed before demolition or refurbishment started
• the accuracy of the details of the person who commissioned the work
• the accuracy of the timeframe in which the work is being carried out
• whether clearance inspection was conducted appropriately.

Through this campaign, WHSQ will determine whether asbestos-related work is being carried out safely, competently and in accordance with licence conditions and legislative requirements. WHSQ may also undertake comprehensive assessment of asbestos removal work.

Now is the time to review your obligations. Ensure you submit accurate Form 65 notifications on time and conduct clearance inspections in person in accordance with the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011.
