Snakes at work: why you should never handle one yourself
In Queensland, snake encounters are a part of life. With more than 120 species—over 65% of which are venomous—snakes can show up in both expected and unexpected places, including at work.
The critical message for all workers and employers is simple: Never attempt to remove a snake yourself or rely on a colleague or friend who 'knows snakes'. Always contact a licensed, professional snake catcher.
People have been seriously injured or killed after wrongly believing they could safely handle a snake.
What to do if you see a snake at your workplace:
Snakes can appear in offices, warehouses, outdoor work areas, or even storage spaces. If you encounter one:
- Do not approach, touch, or attempt to trap or kill the snake.
- Stay calm and move away slowly.
- Call a licensed snake removal expert immediately. Handling or relocating a snake without a permit is illegal and highly dangerous.
- Clear clutter and maintain tidy work areas—snakes often hide in dark or enclosed spaces.
- If your role involves outdoor work or areas prone to wildlife, wear protective clothing such as boots and long pants.
- If someone is bitten—or you suspect a bite—call emergency services immediately. Don’t wait.
Snakes are typically more afraid of you than you are of them, but that doesn’t make them safe to handle. Whether venomous or not, they belong in the hands of trained professionals.
