New guidance: Anhydrous ammonia gas

New guidance supports the safe use of ammonia gas fertiliser

Workplace Health and Safety Queensland’s major hazard facilities team has developed new practical guidance to help farmers and industry safely manage the risks associated with ammonia gas fertiliser.

The guidance is the first of its kind in Australia and has been developed in response to renewed interest in ammonia gas as a reliable source of nitrogen-based fertiliser.

Global supply chain disruptions continue to affect the availability of fertilisers and other products farmers rely on, increasing interest in locally produced alternatives.

Ammonia gas is an effective nitrogen-based fertiliser and is particularly important for broadacre crops such as cotton and winter grains, which can significantly deplete nitrogen from the soil.

The new guidance provides practical information to help farmers and the agricultural sector:

• understand and safely manage the risks associated with ammonia gas fertiliser
• comply with relevant safety laws and standards.

The guidance was developed in consultation with Cotton Australia and several of its cotton farmers to help ensure it reflects the practical realities of agricultural operations.
