Sugar mill safety Code of Practice 2024
The Sugar industry Code of Practice 2005, including the Sugar mill safety and Cane rail safety supplement, has been replaced by the updated Sugar mill safety Code of Practice 2024 and Cane rail safety supplement.
This follows feedback which supported a review of the code and supplements to ensure they remain reflective of current best practice.
The new code will continue to provide guidance on how to manage risks related to the sugar industry but has been updated to reflect the significant advancements in safety and technology since the code and supplements commenced.
The updated guidance has been developed in close consultation with representatives from the sugar cane industry, with two separate steering groups established to consider the specific hazards for sugar milling and cane rail operations respectively.
Key changes include specific guidance in relation to the use of perimeter fencing to manage the risks of cane bin collision with workers or other mobile plant. The sugar mill supplement has also been incorporated into the main code to increase usability and avoid unnecessary duplication across the documents.
The Code (PDF, 0.86 MB) and supplement (PDF, 0.98 MB) came into effect on 23 September 2024.
