Staying safe during and after the North Queensland weather events
North Queensland has faced significant adverse weather since December, with the northern and northwest regions particularly affected.
A slow-moving system caused major flooding across North West Queensland, impacting Cloncurry Winton and Normanton. Ex-Tropical Cyclone Koji then crossed the coast between Ayr and Bowen on 11 January, dropping more than 300mm of rain on already saturated areas.
While conditions continue to be monitored the focus is shifting to recovery efforts.
Importantly businesses must assess health and safety risks before undertaking any flood recovery work as work health and safety and electrical safety laws still apply. Businesses must also ensure workers and volunteers have adequate training, supervision and use appropriate safety equipment (enclosed footwear, heavy work gloves, and protective clothing) to undertake this type of work.
Floods create significant hazards, including contaminated water, hidden debris, electrical risks, and potential exposure to harmful substances such as asbestos. It’s important to stay cautious during clean‑up.
Whether you’re cleaning up around your property, helping a neighbour or returning to work after flooding, take time to check conditions before starting.
Here are some simple steps to stay safe:
- Avoid entering floodwater where possible.
- Wear sturdy boots gloves and protective clothing.
- Be cautious around damaged structures and equipment.
- Have a licensed electrical contractor inspect any switchboards, wiring and any electrical equipment affected by flood water before turning the power back on.
- Wash hands regularly and clean any cuts straight away.
- Make sure you drink plenty of water, take regular breaks in the shade and keep an eye on others working around you. If someone looks unwell or overtired, stop and get help.
