Secure construction sites ahead of storm season
With the holiday season fast approaching and some construction sites moving into Christmas closure periods, remember to ensure your site is safe and secure.
With the severe weather season often comes large storms, heavy winds and hailstones.
How can you prepare most effectively?
Organise the shutdown of your site well in advance. Neglecting proper maintenance isn’t just a financial hazard—it can also put lives at risk.
- Protect your sites against unauthorised entry. This is particularly crucial if your site is close to tourist areas, sports fields, playgrounds, or places where children play, as well as locations where intoxicated individuals might accidentally wander in.
- Clean up loose materials and debris, so they don’t get picked up in a typical Queensland summer storm. Conduct a thorough clean up before you lock up.
- Reinforce structures and ensure partially completed buildings or walls are not a risk of collapse in strong winds, torrential rain or flooding.
- Secure plant or machinery so that it cannot be operated by trespassers.
- Secure deep excavations by covering, barricading, or limiting access to prevent unauthorised entry.
- Ensure all dangerous goods and hazardous chemicals have been disposed of safely or locked away.
- Use clear warnings and install visible signage warning unauthorised people are prohibited from accessing the site.
A properly secured site does more than protect assets and ongoing work; it safeguards individuals, lowers your risk of liability, and ensures you comply with regulations. By addressing these measures now, you can enjoy your time off with confidence, knowing your site is prepared to face the season’s weather.
Safe sites mean safe communities— and a relaxed, worry-free break for you and your team.
