Upcoming asbestos compliance audits for Queensland business

Do you know when your business premises was built?

If it was built before 1990, it is likely that asbestos may be present.

From 1 August 2025, Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) inspectors will audit businesses operating from buildings built before 1990 or those likely containing asbestos.

The audit will continue until 31 October 2025.

It does not matter what kind of business you run or how modern your building may appear, if it was built before 1990, asbestos could still be present.

The audits focus on supporting businesses to meet their responsibilities under the Work Health and Safety Regulation 2011 (Part 8.3 Management of asbestos and associated risks).

That includes having an asbestos register and management plan in place where asbestos has been identified.

Where needed, inspectors may take enforcement action such as issuing statutory notices or on-the-spot fines.

Now is the time to check the age of your premises and make sure your business is meeting its legal obligations.

Taking action now helps protect the health and safety of your workers and contractors.
