Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ) have notified a number of impacted businesses regarding the detection of asbestos-containing fire rated board (FRB) as a result of information provided by Australian Border Force (ABF).
The FRB was imported into Australia from China by a Victorian company and subsequently on-sold to a Queensland manufacturer.
The Queensland manufacturer (Firemex Pty Ltd) has been working collaboratively with the Regulator to provide information relating to the distribution of the affected fire doors, however, there has been delays due to access restrictions whilst decontamination activities were being completed at the manufacturers warehouse.
Affected businesses have been contacted by WHSQ providing advice about the nature of the risk, legislative duties and recommended actions.
Fire doors that contain the asbestos FRB pose an extremely low risk if they are in good condition and left undisturbed as the FRB is encapsulated in steel/wood.
