These films include an introduction by University of Queensland experts and four case studies of Australian companies. The case studies show how blue-collar workers face challenges maintaining a healthy lifestyles and building active living and good dietary choices into their lives. The final film presents management perspectives and highlights how effective leadership can facilitate healthy choices at work.

Applied research

Eight projects totalling $1.7million were facilitated by the Healthy Worker Initiative from 2011 to 2015  to implement and evaluate research which address chronic disease risks in three priority industries – construction, rural and remote industry and transport workplaces.

Industry Research project/partnerOverview
Construction RMIT University The research project considered environmental and organisational aspects of health promotion programs, focusing on mental health and physical activity.
Construction Griffith University Targeted nutrition intake and eating habits.  This research focused on three areas  of health promotion – readiness for change, behavioural change therapy and safety culture.
Agriculture Diabetes Queensland and Growcom: “Live Well Farm Well” This project tested evidence-based workplace wellness models in agricultural industries to reduce the lifestyle risk factors for chronic disease in regional, rural and remote Queensland.
Agriculture Royal Flying Doctors Service (RFDS): “Fit for Field” The aim of this project was to expand the evidence  which reduces chronic disease risk in remote central and south west Queensland agricultural workers.
Transport University of Queensland: “Shifting Gears” This project tested the impact a smartphone intervention had on the physical activity and healthy dietary choices of Queensland local delivery and long-haul truck drivers.
Transport Queensland University of Technology This project focused on improving truck drivers’ access to healthy food options and increasing physical activity.
Transport Connetica This project targeted physical activity and nutrition included in the Workplace healthy audit and Healthy worker policy, focus groups and workplace survey.
Transport Rhealth: “On the road project” The goal of the project was to design, deliver and evaluate a three-month pilot intervention across three transport industry workplaces to reduce chronic disease risks.
All industries University of Queensland: "BeUpstanding Champion Toolkit" This project developed an online champion toolkit to assist workplaces to reduce sedentary time of workers. The pilot project created tool to implement in the workplace.
