Notify us of an incident
It's important to first make sure that people are safe if an incident happens.
You must notify us immediately if there's a work-related death, a serious injury or illness, or a dangerous incident at your place of work or caused by the running of your business.
In an emergency call 000
- Call 000 immediately.
- Give first aid if safe to do so.
- Don’t touch or move anything unless it’s to give first aid or stop further injury or property damage.
- Once the people involved in an incident and the incident site are safe, follow the steps below to notify us of the incident.
- Call 000 immediately.
- Don't touch anyone who’s receiving an electric shock.
- Turn off the power.
- Free the person receiving an electric shock from the power source using a non-metallic item such as a wooden broomstick. Don't use metal items.
- Notify the police and the electricity entity (possibly Energex or Ergon Energy) if overhead powerlines have fallen down.
- Don’t attempt to rescue a person until you are sure the power source has been switched off or fallen powerlines have been de-energised by the electricity entity.
- Give first aid if safe to do so.
- Don’t touch or move anything unless it’s to give first aid or stop further injury or property damage.
- Once the people involved in an incident and the incident site are safe, follow the steps below to notify us of the incident.
Steps to notify us of an incident
Once you've made sure that the people involved in a work-related incident and the incident site are safe, you must:
1. Notify Workplace Health and Safety Queensland or the Electrical Safety Office
2. Don't disturb the site of an incident
3. Notify WorkCover Queensland or your workers' compensation insurer
Who must notify us of an incident?
Anyone can notify us of an incident, but the business owner or employer is legally required to do so and there are penalties if they don't.
Electricity distribution entities must also notify us when they become aware of a serious electrical incident or dangerous electrical event, in addition to the notification that must be made by the business owner or employer.
