Category five – Best workplace health and wellbeing initiative
Bama Services is an Indigenous-owned civil construction, building and landscaping services contractor based in Cairns. Bama Services was established under the Cape York Partnership in 2010 and began as a small construction and landscaping business designed to provide a ‘transition to work’ pathway for young Indigenous school leavers.
The ‘Support and wellbeing program’ was created by Bama Services to support people from disadvantaged backgrounds to overcome personal challenges and barriers. The aim of the program was to improve the health and wellbeing for staff. It has an individual focus along with a significant commitment from management, delivering positive outcomes for employees and the community. The program has service providers who work with staff in both group and one-on-one settings.
The providers assist employees with issues that may be affecting their capacity to work, allowing them to retain their jobs and their ability to support their families. This program assists employees with unique workforce issues in a remote location and maintains a stable, highly-skilled workforce. The program has enabled the staff to achieve professional goals.
