Motor and petroleum industry forum discusses the role of supervisors in return to work

Forum giveaways

Motor and petroleum employers gained access to a range of tools, resources and experience at WorkCover’s employer forum held on Tuesday, 23 February. Information provided focused on the role of supervisors in a successful return to work outcome.

The forum gave attendees an opportunity to:

  • learn what supervisors can do when an injury occurs;
  • understand the impact they can have on a successful return to work; and
  • appreciate the worker’s point of view.

Psychological conditions were also discussed in the context of facilitating a supportive work environment and what supervisors can do to assist with building good workplace culture.

Attendees also learned about the benefits of injured workers staying and recovering at work (where possible) in order to:

  • promote worker self-esteem;
  • reduce the impact of the injury on the workplace; and
  • improve their general health and well-being.

Guest presenter Mike Childs, occupational therapist at River City Work Health & Safety, provided a highly engaging and interactive session on rehabilitation, injury prevention, the benefits of effective rehabilitation, suitable duties plans and facilitation of a supportive work environment. A key focus of Mike’s presentation was the sourcing of suitable duties within the workplace; looking at both alternate and/or modified duties. Easy to understand analogies and examples were used throughout Mike’s presentation to help put information into context.
