Automotive retailer and wholesaler Repco, part of the GPC Asia Pacific group, is helping injured workers rehabilitate and get back to work sooner through WorkCover Queensland’s recover at work host employment program.

GPC Asia Pacific Group OHS&E Manager Jacqui Markides said their regular participation in the recover at work host employment program is recognised at a senior management level.

“This initiative is seen by everyone in our company as simply part of the way we do business,” Ms Markides said.

“Our managers have reported positive experiences in hosting injured workers who are unable to find suitable duties with their existing employer.

“These workers are often excited at the opportunity to work somewhere different and gain new skills and so make for eager team members with a strong work ethic.”

Repco has more than 60 stores throughout Queensland, and always provides suitable duties to their injured workers.

A suitable duties plan can make all the difference in getting injured workers back to work sooner. This graduated work program helps workers improve their work fitness and rebuild their confidence.

Through Repco’s strong return to work focus, they have been able to achieve a final return to work rate of 100 per cent. Their stay at work rate, where the injured worker does not need to take any time off work, is 16 per cent higher than the motor vehicle parts retailing industry average. Their first return to work day average is four days, while the industry average is 13.96 days.

Repco’s resulting premium rate is half that of the industry average.

Hosting injured workers from within their own industry means Repco are also helping to contribute to lower premium rates for their industry by reducing overall claims costs.

“Some workers can’t return to their former workplace, even after their recovery. We have offered ongoing roles to workers who have participated in the recover at work program with Repco. It’s a great way to trial a worker without obligation when a team is looking to recruit a new staff member,” Ms Markides said.
