Lunar Mining Services

Category eight – Best rehabilitation and return to work management system

Lunar Mining Services is a specialist provider of underground contracting services in the Bowen Basin (BMA Broadmeadows Mine) and across Queensland. It is committed to the prevention of work-related injuries and illness.

Some of the challenges faced when Lunar Mining Services developed its integrated health management system was the size of the business and the limited resources available to assist with the implementation. The directors allocated extra resources and a gap analysis identified what was needed to meet all requirements for all clients and to be compliant.

Communication is a core element of Lunar Mining's rehabilitation and return to work processes. The company requires all injuries and incidents to be reported, with a no blame or repercussion approach. This is encouraged through open and honest communication with employees. The directors of Lunar Mining visit each site every week to be available to employees to discuss any issues or ongoing requirements they may have. Regular toolbox talks and communication sessions are held with employees to discuss policies and procedures and Lunar Mining shares its return to work cases with its client (host employer).

Feedback from returned to work injured workers is reviewed and discussed at Lunar Mining's monthly management meetings. This feedback is used to measure the success of the systems and to determine if changes are needed to any policies and procedures.

The implementation of the integrated health management system has had a positive outcome for all employees, managers and directors. This implementation has allowed Lunar Mining to work more cost-effectively and productively and improve workplace culture.
