Category one – Best solution to an identified work health and safety issue
Hyne Timber developed and implemented an engineering control that uses swinging steel arms to lock against and prevent logs falling from trucks during the unstrapping process.
The design eliminates drivers' exposure to falling logs and minimises their exposure to other risks in the log yard. It allows them to work from a protected area on the driver's side of the truck to release the tension on the binders and wind up the load restraint straps.
The solution is supported by administrative controls including an induction and training program, signage and a light system to notify drivers when it is safe to enter or exit the station.
Drivers have reported the swing arms are easy to use and there have been no reports of logs moving during the unbinding process since the solution was implemented in December 2016.
