Murphy Pipe and Civil, Albion
Category seven – Best workplace health and wellbeing initiative
In late 2014, a Murphy Pipe and Civil (MPC) employee took his own life. The sad incident prompted management and crews to ask what they could do to better support their team mates.
MPC developed an app tailored to suit FIFO employees and focus on issues such as stress, depression, fatigue and anxiety. At the beginning and end of each swing, employees are sent a link encouraging them to access the app and provide feedback on their mental wellbeing.
The app has had a participation rate as high as 98 per cent and regularly records completions of between 85-95 per cent, with all staff agreeing that the app was a positive addition to combat mental health issues in the workplace.
The app has been rolled out to the company's 1,000 plus coal seam gas workforce in the Surat Basin, all of its projects including the Bowen Basin coal fields, street works in Brisbane and iron ore mines in Western Australia.
