Category nine – Injured work achievement awards
While working in his role as maintenance coordinator Michael fell during a roof inspection, resulting in several broken ribs and a spinal injury that means he will not walk again.
He had metal rods and screws installed on either side of his spine and spent four months in the spinal injuries unit. On the days things seemed too hard, Michael focused on being able to live his life normally – with the aim to get back to work and spend time with friends and family.
Michael returned to work in his pre-injury role seven months after the incident on reduced hours and suitable duties. Since this time, he has obtained his drivers licence and has been supplied a modified work vehicle. Michael and his family were supported by his employer throughout the whole process, giving him the opportunity to focus on rehabilitation, return to work and contributing again.
Since the incident, Michael obtained his driver licence and now has modified work vehicle
