Category four – Best individual contribution to work health and safety
Using a participative approach, Sharon Vandermaat led the implementation of the PErforM program, (which focuses on ergonomic risks), in the maintenance branch at City of Gold Coast Council (CGCC).
Sharon trained, mentored and supported program facilitators and staff to implement the framework for the 580 staff working across road works, parks and building maintenance and city cleaning.
Through management support, clear communication systems and engaging directly with the workforce, Sharon empowered the branch to take an active role in looking for opportunities to improve safety, indicating a major shift in safety culture.
As a result of Sharon's leadership, the PErforM program has been hugely successful at CGCC with over a 50 per cent reduction in manual handling injuries and 80 per cent reduction in claim costs. She was a speaker at the Queensland Government's 2015 Musculoskeletal Symposium and regularly shares learnings with other organisations.
