Category two – Employer achievement award – small/medium employer
Tropical Reef Shipyard (TRS) are committed to a 100 percent return to work for all injured workers as well as contracted labour hire workers. They provide meaningful suitable duties to all injured workers. TRS have a good working relationship with treating medicos and work closely with them to ensure that together a suitable duties plan is developed for an injured worker.
TRS have a dedicated rehabilitation and return to work coordinator who is involved in the injury management and works closely with the injured workers, treating doctors and supervisors. This assists when putting together suitable duties to facilitate the best return to work outcome. Additional training may be required to accommodate the suitable duties program requirements, which management support.
TRS's claims rate was three times that of industry and now it is the lowest in industry (480 days LTI free as of June, this is the first time in the history of the company, since 1977). In 2011–12 it was seven days average LTI free.
The return to work culture in TRS is now outstanding and continues to improve. It has gone from one of accepting injuries as part of doing business because of the nature of the industry, to one of doing all you can to ensure the welfare of employees and a positive return to work. In past years, TRS suffered from ongoing lost time injuries with many common law claims and minimal return to work participation.
