Common causes of work-related musculoskeletal disorders

Best practice

Understand the common causes of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) such as tendinitis, back pain, carpel tunnel, ligament strain.

Why this is important

As a rehabilitation and return to work coordinator, you’re responsible for ensuring a worker’s early, safe and durable return to work. To do this, you need to understand why the worker’s injury occurred and ensure that risk of this injury occurring again has been addressed as part of the worker’s return to work plan.

Your toolkit

Most MSDs are either caused by slips, trips and falls at level (e.g. tripping on uneven flooring) or hazardous manual tasks.

MSD’s can also be caused by:

  • a sudden force from pushing or lifting heavy objects
  • gradual wear and tear over time, for example, through repetition and working in awkward postures.

Here are some strategies, tools and resources to assist you in meeting best practice:

  • Check in with your injured worker. A worker will often be an expert in the work that they do and can identify what can be done to eliminate the risk of further injury on their return to work.
  • Go to Workplace Health and Safety Queensland’s after an injury information to see what you can do at your workplace after a slip, trip or fall, or a sprain or strain injury.
  • Read Workplace Health and Safety Queensland’s MSD FAQs, to help answer common questions you may have about how to manage MSDs.
  • Watch Workplace Health and Safety Queensland’s video to find out more about managing hazardous manual tasks.
