Snorkelling fatalities
In August 2022, a member of the public died while snorkelling. Investigations show he had been snorkelling from a tour operated vessel when the lifeguard spotted he was not moving. In September 2022, a member of the public became unresponsive and was declared deceased during a swim with the whales activity. Early investigations show she was snorkelling with a tour operator and holding onto a long rope. Also in September 2022, a member of the public became unresponsive and was declared deceased when she collapsed and lost consciousness after snorkelling. Early investigations show she had returned to the platform while snorkelling.

Recreational diving fatality
In February 2022, a man was participating in a recreational scuba dive with a dive tour operator. Not long into the dive, the man was unresponsive and sadly died. Investigations are continuing.

Safety at swimming pools
In December, a young girl was pulled from a local swimming pool unresponsive. Thankfully though, she quickly recovered. The girl was at the pool for school-based activities.

This safety alert highlights the risk of falls from diving tower structures and provides guidance on risk controls. It applies to parts of diving towers where there is a risk of someone falling onto a solid structure below. It does not apply to parts of diving towers directly above water.

In October 2020, a woman was on a guided snorkel tour when she apparently panicked and needed to be taken back to the main vessel. However, on the rescue tender she lapsed into unconsciousness.

Incident at Public Swimming Pool
In November, a young child was submerged underwater for less than two minutes at a supervised public pool. On-duty lifeguards administered CPR until QAS officers arrived and took over. The child was taken to hospital and later passed away.

Father and son drown at beach lagoon
In October 2018, a father and his son who were on holidays from overseas drowned at Airlie Beach lagoon. It appears they got into difficulty in deeper water. Both were pulled from the water but could not be resuscitated. Investigations are continuing.
