Help with court summary searches

You can search for any workplace court summary on this site from the court summary search page or refine your search result from the advanced search section.

If you cannot find what you are looking for, please either:

  1. Check the spelling of your keywords
  2. Try more general keywords or phrases
  3. View a summary list of all WHSQ court summaries
  4. Broaden your search by searching our entire site.

The search engine uses a web style search, in that it uses internet style query syntax, such as the + (plus), - (minus) and 'phrase' operators.

The search uses a case insensitive approach to matching query terms with documents. Using uppercase, lowercase or a combination of both does not affect the query.

Note: Workplace Health and Safety Queensland court summaries do not include matters prosecuted by the independent Office of the Work Health and Safety Prosecutor (OWHSP). For matters led by the OWHPS commencing 18 March 2019. visit owhsp.qld.gov.au.

Search query

Enter the keyword(s) you are looking for in the enter query field, then click on the SUBMIT button. The search engine will return a set of results.

If you want to search more than one category, or perform complex search requests through the use of an assisted menu go to the advanced search section where more features are available.

Quick start

Step 1 - Enter a search term

Step 2 - Click on search. This will display the first 10 results based on your search term.

Note: If you want to change your term, enter the new term in the query field then click on the SUBMIT button.

Basic search

You can initiate a basic search using keywords or phrases. For example, if you want to see all workplace court summaries relating to 'diving', you can start by typing in a single-word query.

To find more specific results that relate to 'a scaffolder falling from a high platform' you could enter several keywords or phrases that describe the subject more precisely, such as: 'scaffold falls from heights'.

The search uses a case insensitive approach to matching query terms with documents. Using uppercase, lowercase or a combination of both does not affect the query.

Advanced search

The advanced search is a user friendly menu assisted way of performing complex searches.

Step 1 - Select one or more category collections

Step 2 - Enter keywords or phrases into the query term box(s), and/or

Step 3 - Select from one or more of the drop-down menus

Optional - Click on the SEARCH button

The court summary search will only provide search results for those workplace prosecuted incidents that occurred in Queensland.

Example 1 - Industry

Find all documents relating to the 'manufacturing' industry - select from the INDUSTRY drop-down menu 'manufacturing' AND click on the SEARCH button.

Example 2 - Industry and court location

To refine your collection to the 'manufacturing' industry and narrow the court location to 'Rockhampton' – select from the INDUSTRY drop-down menu 'manufacturing' AND enter the query term 'Rockhampton' in the COURT query term box AND click on the SUBMIT button.

The court summary search will only provide search results for those workplace prosecuted incidents that occurred in Queensland.

Example 3 - Date range

To find a workplace prosecuted incident within a particular date range.

Select from either the DECISION DATE or OFFENCE DATE query term box. Enter the to/from date range in the format of 'YYYYMMDD'.

Glossary of category terms

The below is a glossary of category terms used within the advanced search and/or search results page.

Category termDefinition
Decision date The date month year the Magistrates Court handed down its decision.
Defendant

The full legal name of the defendant, either a company or person whom have been charged with the offence. Example:

  • B. Shaw Electrical Pty Ltd
  • Groves, Wayne Edmund
  • Safta, Nadia trading as King Rooster
  • Cool Cats Pty Ltd
Description A brief summary describing the workplace incident.
Court The suburb that the court is located (e.g. Cairns Industrial Magistrates Court).
Industry The industry group the defendant operates business in.
Legislation

The section of the legislation that the prosecution refers to.

Magistrate A judicial officer presiding over a Magistrate court. Includes the title, first and last name of the magistrate (i.e. Mr John Hodgins)
Offence date The date month year the workplace incident occurred.
Penalty The punishment imposed on the defendant found guilty of the offence. View the current schedule of maximum penalties.

Search results

The search results page presents the total matching results after performing your search query via either the basic or advanced search.

Refine or search again

Enter the keyword(s) you are looking for in the enter query field, then select SUBMIT and the search engine will return the results.

If you want to search more than one category, or perform complex search requests through the use of an assisted menu click on the 'Advanced search' link provided. Refer to the advanced search section for more details on how to perform an advanced search.

Result set description

The result set description displays the total number of results returned for your search query and which of these results is being displayed on the page.

For example:

Displaying search results 11-20 of 3,133 for diving

This example indicates that 3133 results were returned and that results 11 through 20 of these are being displayed on the search results page.

Search result entries

The search result entries display information about and links to the court summaries that matched your search query. By default, the documents with the most number of 'hits' or (score) matching term by term your search query will appear at the top of the list. A query 'term by term' match is equivalent to a boolean OR query.

Click on either the search result title or the URL to view more details of the selected court summary.

Pagination

The pagination provides you with links to assist with navigating through the search results pages.
